From vast experience, its much more likely you have a problem with your wiring, driver -vref or motor than your board. The GTR boards are rock solid. Im sure like all things electronics, they can be killed, I’ve just not yet found a way – and trust me, my experiments have really pushed the limits of what these boards are designed to handle. I couldn’t say the same for SKR boards of any flavor.
From everything you said, and my experience, I’d say your skipping troubles are a coincidence and not related to changing the board. Your wiring, poor terminal connections, vref etc are all much more realistic causes of what you’ve described.
